Judy Daly

Hi, I’m Judy Daly; an old retired fogie from NASA. And no, I was not an astronaut! My field was in computer data management and technical documentation development/maintenance. It’s a big difference editing Dusty's books, and a lot more fun! Hope you enjoy reading these books as much as I enjoyed reading and editing them.

Andy Lintner

Hi, I’m Andy, the cover art designer of all the books for Dusty's Book Barn. Captivating the essence of a story in the symbolism and art of one cover design... well, that’s too wordy, let me try that again: Slapping some colors on the front of a book and doodling all over it, yep, that’s what I do and enjoy to do at Dusty's, very much so :)

Perils of War Book 1
Sammy grew up on streets of Chicago, going nowhere. His real desire was to be someone his mom could be proud of. Without her support, encouragement and love, Sammy would not have made the break away. See how Sammy made the break and ended up in the jungles of Viet Nam and ultimately a visit to the White House. Less
We all have to choose our own path in life. Some go for greatness and pursue their dreams. Sadly, others don’t choose at all; and may not even know where they are headed. If you don’t choose your path, life will choose it for you.

So goes it with Sammy. A 19-year old black kid from the streets of Chicago. He had no ambition, no drive. The year was 1968 and he lived on the south side of Chicago; a place of poverty, crime, and uncertainty. He lived with his mother who worked two jobs to keep a roof over their heads. His father had run off when he was a baby and never came back. This was Sammy’s life. Hanging out on street corners with his so-called friends; not knowing what tomorrow would bring.

Sammy’s life seemed to be going nowhere until one day fate stepped in. Fate always has a way of changing things and that day it changed Sammy’s life forever.

Perils of War Book 2

Perils of War Book 2
Jeff was injured in Vietnam and lost both his legs. His depression ran deep. He rejected everyone including his wife. This is his story of his struggle; what he went through mentally, physically, and emotionally to return to a normal productive life. He had the best help available from Dale and Sammy, their family and the staff at the VA hospital. Less
Dale stood outside the entranceway to the Chicago VA hospital thinking about the handicap vets that had come through here for treatment. He thought about how many soldiers had successfully recovered from their war injuries, both physical and mental, and had moved on with their lives. Then there were the failures; wounds so deep that they would never return to a normal life. That saddened Dale greatly.

Dale was a certified therapist that worked with handicap vets trying to recuperate from the perils of war. He worked tirelessly to help them to learn to live with their handicap. His job description was to promote the health, independence, and quality of life for disabled vets by following a four-step process; assessment, planning, intervention activity implementation and evaluation. That was the textbook description of what he was supposed to do. However, for Dale, it was more than that. He had a personal connection with each and every soldier that came through here. He had been there, done that! He went through this with his brother Sammy! Now he faces a more difficult case with Jeff. Would he succeed?

Forever in Time Book 1

Forever in Time Book 1
Greg was a young man that had lived a life of crime. With his father in prison and his mother a prostitute, Greg had no choice but to take care of himself. He knew the streets and that’s where he learned to survive; by becoming a thief. His partner-in-crime had a tight leash on him. He wanted to change but didn’t know how. Find out what he went through and if he was able to make the change! Less

This is a story told from the perspective of a killer. You will hear about his life from childhood to adulthood; on hardships and cruelty, he endured. His father was sent to the pen when he was a small child and his mother became a prostitute to make ends meet. He did not grow up in a happy home nor was he given the attention or love a child needs. If the truth is known, he didn’t have a chance in life. He was destined for failure. At an early age, he learned to take care of himself. The school was forced on him and the only thing he learned was how to get in trouble. He was headed for prison!

In his words, “As I sit in my cell staring out the window, the sunlight casts a shadow of bars on the wall behind me and on me. I look at the light as my freedom. This is what keeps me going. As darkness falls I play out in my mind what will happen to me while I am in jail. First and foremost, I will keep moving toward the light.
In this world of uncertainty, I wonder where I will end up. Will I be in prison for the rest of my life? Will I ever experience the warmth of full sunlight on my body and no shadows of bars? Will I always be in the dark?
While in prison, I’ve turned to read the Bible and have come to the realization that God Himself is the Master of our lives. But He gave us free will. I chose the wrong path. I put myself here, not God. I wonder what His plan is for me now.
Will those I have wronged ever forgive me? I am sure there are several here asking the same question. I think what I am really asking is for mercy. By putting my story on paper, I hope someone will learn from my mistakes and it influences at least one person to choose the right path. With tears flowing from my eyes I ask the question, “Where is the light for me?”

Fight or Die in Vietnam

Fight or Die in Vietnam
Larry was a small-town boy who lived with his mom and dad and worked in the local grocery store. He was a dreamer and wanted to see the world. The military was a way to break away, but he couldn't bear to leave his mom. Fate stepped in and put him in the jaws of death. Will he survive? Less

This is the story about the life of a 19-year-old boy that wanted to see the world...but he didn't want to leave his mom! Was he a whimp? By no means! He loved adventure, but he loved his mom as well and wanted to protect her.
Follow Larry every step of the way; from a go-no-where job in a small town in Texas to the jungles of Viet Nam and everything in between. Through it all, his mom was on his mind.
Here is an excerpt from my story:

"I could hear gunfire on the other side of the compound. My hand was sweating and shaking. I don’t know if I can do this. The sergeant showed up, “Ok. Zappers at the wire. They will be testing our strength so stay alert. Remember, pick your target and don’t go crazy.” Shortly, a couple of VC’s tried to blow a hole in the wire, but before I could shoot, the 50 cal machine gun opened up and took care of that. We relaxed a little. I have been on lots of patrols but nothing like this. The hardest part is just sitting here and waiting; nerve-wracking! I knew the hard part was yet to come. I hate that creepy feeling that something was about to go wrong."

Escape to Freedom
Daniel and Adina were on the run. The Nazis had invaded France and were rounding up Jews. Their only hope for escape was to get to Switzerland a neutral country. They were young, inexperienced, and Jewish. Each step was filled with uncertainty and danger. Will they escape the brutality of the Germans or will they become another figure in time? Less
It was a bad time for the Jews. Many were trying to escape the Nazis’ cruelty. It was a time of sorrow and unknowing fear. Jews were being rounded up and sent to concentration camps or worse; extermination. Families were being separated, never to see each other again. Many families were trying to hide in the countryside of France. Some even tried to make it to Switzerland which was a neutral country.

Adina’s family was one such family. Adina was a 19-year-old Jewish girl who lived on a small farm near Metz, France in the year 1943. She lived with her parents and grandparents. Her grandparents had fled Germany and came to her parent’s farm when the Nazis started rounding up Jews. It was a hard time, an evil time. No one knew when the Germans would invade a home and arrest or even worse, kill the family. That's exactly what happened to her family and her best friend Daniel's family. Now they had only each other.

The Road to Destruction

The Road to Destruction
Troy and Donna were on the road to destruction and drugs were driving. Donna knew that it wasn't what she wanted but she couldn't give up Troy, and he wouldn't change. Will they survive? Less
We live in a world of constant change and uncertainty. The search for that quick buck and the temporary need for escape from the anxiety and anguish of the decisions we have made, often lead us to use chemicals such as alcohol or drugs to escape reality. We fail to understand that the choices we make not only affect us as individuals but also the people around us.

So it goes with Troy and Donna; a couple that had more than their share of troubles. Troy was 42 and Donna was 26, a match not made in heaven. Troy was not only a drug user but a dealer as well. He suffered from a bipolar disorder and was subject to fly off the handle in a minute and has been known to do just that. Donna, on the other hand, was a young lady who was very naïve and depended entirely on Troy. Troy got her hooked on drugs later in their relationship. She couldn’t breathe without Troy, or so she believed. He commanded her every thought and every movement; a most tragic situation.

The Haircut: Country Style

The Haircut: Country Style
This is a humorous story about a small town barber that knew everyone and their "business" if you know what I mean. Pop Jenkins's shop was on his back porch and his barber chair was a #2 washtub and a chair. Pull out the tissue because you will laugh 'til you cry. An excellent short story. Enjoy! Less
I come from a small town in Texas. There is one little store and three churches. On one side of the road is the Baptist church. Across the road is the Methodist church and on the corner of the road is the Church of Christ. We have what we used to call a traveling preacher. He would preach at one church and when he finished, then everyone would get up and go to the second church and he would preach again. Then everyone moved to the third church. It was just about an all day process.
It is important for you to know this because there was a man that lived in the community named Pop Jenkins. I am sure that was not his first name but that’s all anyone knew him by. Pop is the center of this story. He was the leader of the community deacons in all three churches. He was also the town barber.
